According to a report by Cybersecurity Ventures, global cybercrime costs are expected to reach $10.5 trillion USD annually by 2025. This exponential growth is indicative of the increasing sophistication of these threats, writes Anand Jethalia, Country Head, Cybersecurity, for Microsoft India and South Asia, in Moneycontrol.
One of the factors contributing to this sophistication is the use of automated tools and AI by cybercriminals. These tools can scan for vulnerabilities, automate attacks, and even adapt in real time to evade detection.
Jethalia points to a shortage of cybersecurity professionals as an issue that can be addressed, in part, by AI tools. He shares a prediction by Cybersecurity Ventures, that there will be 3.5 million unfilled jobs in the cybersecurity industry through 2025.
Given the advanced nature of modern cyber threats, AI’s role in cybersecurity has become indispensable. AI technologies, including machine learning (ML) and deep learning, can analyse vast amounts of data more quickly and accurately than human analysts. This capability is crucial for identifying patterns and anomalies that may indicate a cyberattack.
Jethalia message to CISOs and security leaders is this: As cyber threats continue to evolve, so too must our defences, and AI stands at the forefront of this ongoing effort.
